Before the Indo-Greeks ruled over countries in the Indian subcontinent as well as the western and northern Indian subcontinent, and Indo-Greek coins were also in circulation in the region. According to historical accounts, the Pratiharas established the Pratihara Empire with its capital at Bhinmal. The state of Bharuch was created by this empire. In the 17th century, the Dutch and the British made it the centre of their cotton trading in Gujarat and commercial warehouses were established by the British and later others in 1616 and 1618. Subsequently, it was plundered by the Marathas in 1617 and 1686. During this period, Brij was handed over to Qadubuddin. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb attacked and destroyed the fort and the fort in 1660. He later rebuilt it in 1686.
