Happiness Isn’t Always Light

We hear it all the time, “do what makes you happy.” It sounds simple, like choosing ice cream on a summer day. But when happiness collides with family, culture, or expectations, it isn’t light at all. It’s heavy.

Choosing happiness for yourself often feels like stealing it from someone else. The guilt doesn’t show on your face, but it eats you alive when you’re alone.

Living With the Guilt

The truth is, happiness doesn’t always feel good at first. You lie awake wondering: Was I cruel? Did I just hurt the people who raised me? Am I selfish for wanting this?

It’s like carrying a backpack filled with invisible stones. You move forward, but the weight is always there. You laugh, but somewhere deep inside, you feel like you’re not allowed to enjoy it fully.

Happiness With Guilt Is Still Happiness

Here’s what I’ve slowly realized: happiness mixed with guilt is still happiness. It’s not shiny or picture-perfect, but it’s real. And maybe that’s the point.

Because no one else is going to hand you happiness wrapped in a bow, you have to choose it, carry the guilt, and still keep walking. Over time, the guilt gets lighter, but the happiness stays. And that’s worth holding on to.
