Virginity is known to be the physical state where sexual intercourse never happened. From the social perspective virginity indicates that a man or woman has never had sex in their lifetime. However, considering the scientific viewpoint that there is no such medical procedure or biological test that determines the virginity of a man or woman. Ironically there is no such medical diagnostic procedure established that identifies if a male virgin or not. In case of male sexual intercourse penetration of penis into a vagina defines the loss of virginity which cannot be proved medically by physical indicator. Disproportionately, in the case of female individual visual inspection of hymen membrane by a medical professional involves virginity test. In some cases insertion of two fingers to assess the opening of the vagina is included for testing the virginity of a woman or girl.

First time sexual intercourse does not necessarily break hymen. Rather a hymen can be torn because of many reasons before physical intercourse such as wide range physical exercise entailing gymnastics or even insertion of tampon can break hymen membrane. Furthermore, not everyone is born with a hymen membrane and it has been found that many women are born with little or not hymen at all. Conversely, some people born with hymen that covers the entire vagina or the hole in their hymen is quite small and requires a small surgical procedure to remove the rest of the tissue. Although hymen cannot be regenerated by itself once it stretches open, it can be restored through a surgical procedure called hymenoplasty or hymen repair surgery where hidden stitches are made on the posterior of hymenal remnant tissue. The exact function of hymen in the body has not been clearly understood nonetheless, it is presumed that hymen prevents bacteria and foreign particles out of the vagina.

Being a virgin is associated with a wide range of benefits such as minimal chance of catching sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Moreover, restraining from sexual activity allows an individual to know his or her partner properly where physical involvement isn't considered the first choice. Virginity myth vulnerable for girls who are weak leading to human trafficking and sexual abuse. Finally it can be concluded that virginity is a myth itself which is a social construction for controlling and judging women negatively.
