Coconut oil has been used in our country since decades. It is made from coconut- the fruit of the coconut tree.  It's a versatile product, used in both cooking and topical applications. Its benefits are widely recognized, and it's free from side effects. Unlike store-bought creams and lotions which are laden with chemicals, coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and nourishes from within. It is especially beneficial for newborns when their skin is tender and still adjusting with the outside world.

It is economical and easily available and for this very reason coconut oil is used in almost every household. While the majority of us are aware that it is used for head massage and as a moisturizer in winter, there are more uses of it.

Let's take a look at the amazing benefits it offers--

1) Body Massage-A gentle massage can do wonders for a newborn. It helps in relaxing their body, skin and tummy and also makes their bones strong. Babies get a sound sleep after a nice body massage followed by a warm water bath. Thus choosing the right oil for baby massage is very important. Besides being natural, this oil can be used in any season with no known side-effects.

2) Cradle Cap- Cradle cap is a common skin condition which is nothing but the presence of fungi on a baby's scalp. As coconut oil is antifungal, rubbing a small amount of it on the baby's scalp prevents dry flakes and nourishes the scalp.

3) Baby Acne-Do you know that babies also get acne?  Baby acne is small, inflamed bumps on a baby's face, neck, back or chest. It often develops within 2 to 4 weeks of birth. Many babies also develop tiny, pimple-like bumps on the face. Usually, it goes on its own within a few weeks. However, if there is redness or your baby is trying to scratch it, apply a small amount of oil on the affected area to soothe it. This treatment can be repeated daily till the acne is gone.

4) Diapers Rash-The diaper rash creams available in the market are artificially made. If you wish to avoid chemicals on the baby's delicate skin, opt for coconut oil to treat diaper rash. Spreading a thin layer of coconut oil on the baby's bum not only cures diaper rash but also gives a soothing effect.

5) Insect Bite-No matter how much a mother protects her tots from mosquito and insect bites, it is bound to happen. Applying coconut oil on the affected area gives instant relief and it's gentle on the baby too.

6) Itchy Skin-Children’s skin is delicate and often gets dry as winter sets in. Smearing coconut oil moisturizes skin without any adverse effects.

7) Cuts and Bruises- Falling down and getting wounds is an integral part of children’s growing years. It is always recommended to give first aid and consult a doctor if the wounds are serious or there is any pus formation.  To ease the itchiness when the wound is healing and they feel like scratching, consider applying a drop of coconut oil for relief.

8) Eczema-Eczema is another skin condition related to inflammation and itchiness of skin. It usually gets worse during winter as the skin itself becomes dry. The best way to treat this condition is keeping skin moisturized. If your child is suffering from eczema and if you have already tried a lot of ointments, why not give one shot to coconut oil. Please note that the severity of eczema varies from kid to kid so it is advisable to consult with a pediatrician before applying anything new.

9) For Healthy Hair- Every mother desires thick and shiny hair for her little one (and for herself too!). Regularly massaging the hair and scalp with warm coconut oil helps prevent hair loss, promoting healthy and shiny hair. For adults, mixing coconut oil with apple cider vinegar adds extra shine to your tresses and keeps them frizz free.

10) Adding to Bathwater- This is a well-known home remedy in many Indian households. Add a few drops of coconut oil to bath water acts as a natural moisturizer to children’s delicate skin.

11) Dry Chapped Lips-Just dab a small amount of oil on a cotton ball and apply directly on chapped lips or a sick dried nose and see the miracle!

12) Removing Pen Marks-As children embark on their pen-filled adventures, they are always curious to try it on different surfaces. And what’s the easily accessible canvas? Their own hands and legs! Rub little oil on the marks and watch how instantly it vanishes the stains without damaging your little one’s skin.

13) Teething Pain– Gently massaging the budding gums instantly relieves teething pain. Also applying it on teethers gives babies a soothing effect.

14) Coconut Oil for Cooking -A lot of moms include coconut oil in their daily diet to increase the flow of breast milk. Also, applying it on cracked nipples relieves pain. It is also added in shakes and smoothies for kids, which helps in weight gain. In southern parts of India, coconut oil is the primary oil which is used for cooking. It does have a lot of health benefits but before switching oils or making any dietary changes, always consult your family doctor first.

Please remember:

  • Always do a patch test before using it on the baby's skin as your newborn's skin is extremely delicate and sensitive.
  • Watch out for any allergic reactions such as redness, swelling or itching. Immediately consult a pediatrician or healthcare professional, if needed.

With proper application, coconut oil can contribute to your baby’s overall comfort, health, and well-being. Incorporate coconut oil into your baby’s skincare routine and experience the benefits of this natural wonder oil.
