The name of this place is 'Danakil Depression', which is in the North African country Ethiopia. The weather here is extremely harsh. The earth is completely dry. It is scorching hot and it seems as if fireballs are raining from the sky. Despite this, it is considered one of the most attractive and beautiful natural wonders. People from all over the world come to see this place.
There are many colorful hot springs here, whose water keeps boiling. Boiling lava comes out of the lakes instead of water. Sulphur keeps bubbling in the pits on the ground. Acidic springs keep flowing at many places. There are salt plains all around. Looking at them, you will feel as if you have jumped into a volcano.
Despite the harsh weather, the people of the Afar community consider this place their home. They have become accustomed to the weather here. Usually, if a person lives here, he will get tired of drinking water. But the people of the Afar community do not feel very hungry or thirsty like ordinary people.
These people extract salt from here and sell it in the distant city of Mekelle by camels or donkeys. There is a very famous market in Mekelle. But to reach here they have to travel hundreds of kilometers. Since the entire area is desert, it takes weeks to reach here.
The average temperature here remains above 34.4 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Nowhere else on earth does the average temperature remain this high throughout the year. Sometimes it is very cold, sometimes it is very hot. But in this area the temperature never remains below 35 degrees. The rainfall is also very less or say almost negligible. During summers the temperature here always remains above 50 degrees.
Due to the cruel conditions here, people also call it the gate of hell. 'Danakil Depression' is about 125 meters below sea level. Three tectonic plates of the earth meet here. These are the plates on which our continents and oceans are situated, which are moving away from each other every year.
Due to this upheaval happening inside the earth, fire keeps coming out here. The molten lava is spread over a large area here. There are many active volcanoes in the entire area which keep spewing fire and ash. If you go here, you will feel as if you have reached another planet. The small Awash river flowing here is the lifeline of the people here. These people survive on this.
The Awash river is also amazing. It does not reach the sea. Due to extreme heat, its water dries up in the middle. Salt gets deposited at the bottom. Then this salt becomes the means of livelihood for the people here. If you are planning to visit such a place, you will have to carry plenty of water. You should have strong clothes and shoes to avoid the heat.
