Why do we write 'K' to show thousand?
Nowadays it is the age of internet and social media. In such a situation, whether it is the count of users or views, or even for counting money, the number 1000 is represented by the English letter 'K' on websites.
Usually 'M' is used for million, 'B' is used for billion. In such a case, the letter for thousand should be T but it is represented by 'K'. Why is it so?
Why is 'K' used only for the number '1000'? To know this, we have to go into history. The reason behind this is quite interesting.
Actually many western countries were greatly influenced by Greek and Roman culture. The use of the letter 'K' for thousand also comes from Roman culture. 'CHILLOI' in Greek means thousand. This word came from there. Apart from this, the word K has also been used for thousand in the Bible.
The French shortened the Greek word CHILLOI to kilo. After that kilometer, kilogram etc. were derived. Since kilogram contains 1000 grams, the thousand sign became K.
Thus, the symbol for 'kilo' is 'K'. Apart from this, 'M' stands for million, 'B' for billion, 'T' for trillion, so we do not use the letter 'T' for thousand but started representing it with K.
